About living food and raw food protocols
Living and raw foods
The human factor
If we consider that human beings are thought to have evolved over an
approximate 4 million year period, it is interesting to note that it is only
very recently (relatively speaking) that we have begun to eat cooked or
heated foods.
It is also worth noting that studies of other mammals in their natural
habitats have not revealed any major incidences of the many diseases that
now plague the human race. For example, ailments such as heart disease,
diabetes, cancer and stroke are fairly uncommon in the animal kingdom.
Arguably, one decisive factor is diet.
It is thought that the nutritional significance of living and raw foods lies in accessing simple, natural and ideally
organic foods replete with living digestive enzymes and amino acids. Cooked foods cannot usually achieve this
because, once heat is applied, the food is denatured. Cooking food destroys about half of the protein content,
around 60% of vitamins and renders about 60% of the minerals non-absorbable.
Cooking food also depletes its inherent enzymes, making it much harder to digest and meaning the body has to call
on its own finite supply. The digestive enzymes supplied by the body cannot always match those originally present
in the foods, which means that their digestion is often incomplete. This can potentially lead to problems, such as
blockages of the digestive tract and arteries.
Together, living and raw foods are said to make up a cornerstone of many therapeutic and naturopathic regimes.
This is because proponents of living food protocols claim that living foods are truly “whole foods”, in the sense
that their life-force remains intact and they are therefore enzyme-rich and nutrient dense.
This, in turn, means that they are widely accepted as superfoods. Arguably, the best living foods are grown on
organic farms, because the full complement of nutrients in the soil are preserved and there are no toxic chemicals
to negate their potential benefits.
Fans of living foods, particularly those with medical conditions, claim that one of their key reasons for routinely
choosing these foods is the ability of the body to incorporate them into a failing system, with minimal reliance on
digestive energies. In other words, it is suggested that living foods place a lesser burden on the digestive system
than other food types, without continually depleting our own bodily stores of digestive enzymes.
The time factor
In an ideal world, you would be able to get all required vitamins, minerals and nutrients from living and raw foods
grown yourself under organic conditions. However, in the modern-day world, this is rarely a realistic possibility for
most people.
